Actually, given what I understand of the original Milgram experiment both Callie and Shaonnon failed the experiment. Callie because she repeatedly obeyed orders which caused pain and suffering despite knowing they were wrong. Shannon because she agreed to take Callie's place for the 2nd round. She could have insisted that she be released then refused to go on. This presumes that it was a valid experiment. A couple of times the tormenter lied to the girls. Once when the initial draw was made as he implied that only one girl was to be subjected and then later insisted they be switched. Then again with his repeated threats to gag Shannon. If she had thought about it she should realise he couldn't gag her without making the experiment impossible. Also his clear sadism in tormenting her further even after the experiment was 'finished' suggests he had ulterior motives. [Having read the sequeal it's a pity Shannon didn't follow through on complaining about his behaviour, which she could have done without invalidating the pass she needed in the topic having performed the experiment]. I'm in two minds about Callie and whether she was actually in on the act. I did notice she drew the slip and said Shannon was the subject and gave no chance to check on this. Also the sheer level of pain and humulation inflicted, plus her abuse of Shannon after the experimenter had left, makes me wonder about her motives. [On the other hand the initial Milgram experiments and some others as well as the evidence of history shows that people in such situations are willing to obey orders to torture others. Although her continued treatment of Shannon, who had suffered a lot of pain on her behaviour makes me very dubious]. Steve (8/10)

- It's reviews like this that make me glad I take the time to write these stories, because it shows that readers actually analyze and consider the plot lines, world, and character's motives behind the action.
My initial consideration was a single-blind experiment, where Callie would be in on the scheme, with the original hypothesis being whether or not torture sharpens memory. But then, I wanted to keep the reader guessing as to who the real villain was, so I set it up as a double-blind situation. Certainly the professor conducting the experiment would be the "heavy", as he was the one with full and total control. Consequently, Shannon would be the "good" at the other end of the spectrum; the poor innocent soul subjected to a cruel world. That left Callie to fall somewhere in between. I made her younger than Shannon to imply innocence, but we all know how cruel children can be at times, so I tried to incorporate that idea into her character as well. And, indeed, we see she (reluctantly) participates in being cruel up to the point where it's her turn in the chair. Only one person could save her, and that's the "good guy", so poor Shannon gets a double-dose. If there's a lesson to be learned from this experiment, it might be the tendency for minors to blindly follow authority, no matter how cruel, until the danger shocks them (literally) to their senses, and by then the damage is done. Thanks again for an informative review, and I'm glad you took the time to (a) read my material, and (b) critique it. It certainly will push me in my efforts to create better literature on this site, knowing that intelligent people will analyze it!

Very good story -a derivation on some real-life experiments- which is handled nicely. Although I found the crossing-over to overtly sexual eperiments a tad rushed (and the participants way too eager to 'enjoy' what's being done to them) to have me a grudgeless read. JJ (9/10)

I really enjoyed this. I'd like to see a follow on when Callie is the subject of the experiment. (9/10)
