The fight between the body and the mind, which eventually loses, is descibed in an extraordinary excitng way. (10/10)

If "Hirst Hall" proves one thing --beyond any reasonable doubt-- then it is that Surtea should stick to her own imaginings, instead of basing her writings on other people's works. Sure, those other stories have their merits too, and yes, we always base our stuff on existing work as we are subconsciencely influenced by everything around us.
But, compared to "Hirst Hall", Surtea's other pledgelings were just spots of messing about, dabblings, throwing cheap paint at weary canvas, from a distance hithertho never used for drawing a picture; Uncle Tom's shack next to the Burj Dubai Tower. You get the picture.
One reason for "Hirst Hall" being so much better than what Surtea uploaded so far, is of course the restrictions of an existing parameter falling away. Here, Surtea can add/eliminate whatever she wants, because there's no squares within which lines she must color. Because it's *her* baby.
And it must have been a difficult delivery too, because the baby came to see the light as a 250 pound, fulgrown adult.
"Hirst Hall" is a classic. Both in erotica as in setting. But most of all it is a classic in style. A lush, lavishly written text, rich in detail -without over-encumbering the reader's mind- it depicts with painstaking accuracy this woman's life.
Dickensian in emotions, Bröntish in scope ("Wuthering Hall", anybody?), Austinian in demeanor, Surtea can stand tall and walk proud, because she made the grade from being 'just another writer' to an Author. Don't believe me? Just read, you'll see.
A la bonne-heure.

Thank you for the lovely review, it makes all the hard work on Hirst Hall worthwhile.
You are right about the short stories. They are mere ephemera and should be treated as such. I can write one in an hour or so. But despite the failure of this site to load them with the drawings, they are remarkably popular. I get oodles of mail about them and requests for more.
But they are not the labour of love that Hirst Hall is. I love Austen, Dickens and the Brontes and am in their thrall. So yes, Sir Thomas is Mr Rochester, Mr Darcy or Heathcliff and Lady Caroline is Jane, Elizabeth or Kathy. I just added the lashings of sex that the authoresses were to coy to leave in. It is hard work though and becuase it has grown into a magnum opus I have to work at having each chapter stand alone while moving the plot forward. But I am finally writing the last chapter: the eighteenth.

Thank you for the reply, Surtea. A thing I want to set straight, as, when re-reading my 'review', I (involuntarily) make it sound as though your other 'stuff' wouldn't be 'any good'. On the contrary. But I shouldn't have made a comparison as there's no comparison to be made. It's like putting a Fiat 500 next to a Ferrari Testa Rossa (Ferrari is owned by Fiat). While both might be excellent cars, they're in a totally different league...

I'm always a fan of 'period erotica', and this is probably the best I've ever read. Additionally the eroticism is finely done, achieved with sensitivity. No crude sadism thankfully, just fine old English perversions and creative humiliation. Interspersed with the right amount of interesting non-sexual plot dressings - and even those fit so well. That Sir Thomas is a mining engineer, and approaches the matter of toying with Caroline in such an 'engineeringly competent' manner! I'm especially glad to find some T&D included - my favorite. Since he does everything so thoroughly, poor Caroline if he gets the notion to try this for extended durations!
Eagerly awaiting more. (10/10)

Thank you for such a kind review! Excuse my ignorance, I am new to this, but what is T&D?

Teasing & Denial, is one of my wild guesses...

Exemplary work. Excellent characterization, plot, dialogue. Pushes buttons that I love to have pushed. Humiliation, degradation, bastinado (rarely handled as well as this author has) and all accomplished in a scenario with a minimum requirement for suspension of disbelief. I look forward to much more from this author. (10/10)

Sehr gute Geschichte. Thank you for your kind words. I am sorry the story is hard to read. I have deliberately used literary and old-fashioned words to try to create a feeling of 1800.
Yes there will be another 5-6 chapters. Even better, my friend Belpheghor is translating it into German. He is struggling with my language so you won't have to!

Thamk you for reviewing my story. Which maid? Mary or Rose? One has a happier trajectory than the other.

Hallo Surtea!
Da hast du eine wirklich wundervolle Story geschrieben. Die Charaktere sind gut entwickelt und die Story liest sich sehr flüssig. Besonders gut gefallen mir die Erniedrigungen von Lady Caroline.
--
Doch eins fehlt mir etwas.
--

Thank you for your kind words. I will reply in English as I do not want to mangle German too much.
Sir Thomas is not a sadist as such. I am not sure he derives much pleasure from torturing his wife. His enjoyment comes from tormenting her and bending her completely to his will. Where this takes Lady Caroline shall become apparent in the following eight or so chapters.

Excellent development of complex characters. Very erotic and I await more chapters (10/10)

Thank you for your kind thoughts, especially as they follow a chapter with very little sex. I am working on the next chapter which has more.

Wow! I was expecting something akin to Milky. I am enjoying this story too, and the way you are developing it (pacing nicely). In Milky and with this story as well I think being advised what the other females are thinking or conspiring would be additional erotica and add additional stimuli to the stories. That is my comment. I see that chapter five is ready so cheers and keep up the great work. -J (10/10)

Thank you. Milky was an experiment to see if I could write an erotic story. This is a different test. My stories tend to be told from one person's point of view as that is how my fantasies run. But I like your idea of looking at it from Rose or Mrs. Jones' eyes. Might try that in my next story.

I really enjoyed reading the 1st 5 chapters of Hirst Hall....hopng there is more to come. I am a hopeless romantic and love period pieces. I like the way you are developing the characters. The storyline is fluid which I think allows the reader to concentrate more on putting themselves into the story, as one likes to do with every good book they read. I also agree with your choice to use sexual terminology from this era. It is a lot easier to pull off. I look forward to reading more of your work. (9/10)
Replied by: Surtea (Edit) (Feb 28, 2010)
Thank you.
I am finding writing in the Georgian period hard enough (found I had used the adjective 'electric' in chapter 5 just before I sent it) so when researching sexual terminology current then I realised I did not find many of the terms exciting. Of course some of them such as the C word have been around forever.
I am working on the next episode.

I think that in this story, Surtea is trying to adopt the persona and style of a lady circa 1800. This is a very hard thing to do. Make it too raunchy and you lose credibility; make it too Jane Austen and you lose all the raunchiness. Much depends on how the author resolves the question left hanging at the end so far: "How was I to live with a man who could be so calculatingly cruel and yet give me so much pleasure?" Is Lady Caroline going to fight back? I think she must. (9/10)
Replied by: Surtea (Edit) (Feb 28, 2010)
Thank you for your review. Personally I have always felt that Jane Austen's work could only be improved with the occasional sex scene. As her wit has rarely been surpassed I am sure she would have written an elegant but remarkably horny episode.

Reviewer: Abe (Edit) Rating: Feb 24, 2010
I cannot say that I'm familiar with what "published authors" write about Georgian times, but this seems to be capably written. The historical setting is not particularly specific, datewise, but that doesn't detract from the story. My only "complaint" is that the story has not yet revealed how/why the husband has such peculiar tastes. (10/10)
Replied by: Surtea (Edit) (Feb 24, 2010)
Thank you for your kind words and response. An overly complete knowledge of English history, architecture, garden design and portrait painting would put the date of this somewhere in the ten years before Trafalgar. And I am afraid that poor Lady Caroline can only guess at her husband motives or exactly how peculiar his tastes are...

A most entertaining tale. The wife's emotional shift from horror to lust is well documented. I look forward to continued editions; particularly when the Lady Caroline endures the sadistic desires of her husband. (10/10)
Replied by: Surtea (Edit) (Feb 24, 2010)
I am not sure that Sir Thomas is a sadist in the sense the Marquis is. His passion is for tormenting and degrading his wife. Of course if this involves some physical chastisement so much the better. I am working on the next instalment.
